The church of the Apostles' time was pure, consisted of saved believers, was set apart and was persecuted for their faith. In Revelation 3:1-6 in the letter to the church at Sardis (which represents the Reformation period), Jesus indicates for the first time that the church is a remnant of believers in the midst of widespread religious apostasy, systems and churches. With the Sardis church, he addresses overcomers as a remnant rather than as the majority in the church which is called by His name.
